In Batman: Arkham Knight, the Most Wanted side quest titled "Heir to the Cowl" revolves around Azrael, a mysterious warrior clad in armor who seeks to become Gotham's next protector. As Batman, you must test Azrael's abilities through combat trials before discovering the dark truth behind his origins. Navigating this storyline requires finding flaming Bat-Symbol locations across Gotham and making a critical narrative choice at the climax.

Finding Azrael Across Gotham City

To begin the quest, players must locate the burning Bat-Symbols left by Azrael on various rooftops throughout the city. The first trial triggers naturally on Miagani Island near the Grand Avenue Station during early main story progression. Subsequent locations appear on Founders' Island, Bleake Island, and the statue near the center of Miagani Island as you advance through the main campaign.

Each location challenges you to control Azrael in a combat trial where taking a single hit results in immediate failure. Success relies heavily on counterattacks, freeflow combos, and careful gadget usage to handle increasingly complex enemy waves. Completing all four combat challenges unlocks the final phase of the investigation inside the Clocktower.

Reconstruct the Memory at the Clocktower

Once the combat trials are complete, Batman analyzes Azrael's brain structure back at the Clocktower to uncover hidden subconscious programming. Players must scrub through medical memory files to find secret brain tags planted by the Order of St. Dumas. Aligning these markers reveals that Azrael was mind-controlled to assassinate the Dark Knight when the opportunity arose.

After Batman confronts Azrael with this revelation, control shifts back to Azrael as he picks up the Sword of Sin standing behind Batman. At this pivotal moment, players are presented with a definitive choice that shapes the outcome of the character's journey.

Azrael Mission Choices and Consequences

The first option is to attempt to strike Batman with the sword, fulfilling the Order's programming. Batman easily counters the attack, disarms Azrael, and locks him away in the GCPD lockup alongside Gotham's other supervillains. This choice brings a definitive end to Azrael's crusade as a potential hero.

Alternatively, players can choose to break the sword against a nearby pillar or simply walk out of the Clocktower. Choosing to resist the brainwashing allows Azrael to retain his free will and vow revenge against the Order of St. Dumas. He departs Gotham on peaceful terms with Batman, leaving his ultimate fate open to new possibilities.
